Introduction to Quadcopter Drones

The core principle of quadcopter drone control lies in adjusting the speed of each motor to alter the lift distribution generated by the propellers, thereby enabling attitude control (pitch, roll, and yaw) as well as vertical takeoff and landing. The flight controller integrates sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers to provide real-time flight status feedback, while continuously applying PID algorithms for correction to maintain flight stability. At the same time, wireless signals are used to receive control commands, enabling hovering and autonomous navigation.

Control Core: CGF062A
To meet the application requirements of quadcopter drones, Megawin Technology recently introduced the new CGF062A control chip. The device adopts sensorless FOC (sine-wave control) technology to drive drone motors and receives throttle commands through PWM signals from the ESC (Electronic Speed Controller).
Unlike conventional solutions that rely on a 32-bit MCU CPU to calculate current feedback, the CGF062A integrates a built-in Motor Driving Engine (MDE) hardware accelerator capable of directly sampling the three-phase motor current signals ia and ib, while performing CLARKE and PARK transformations entirely in hardware.
The transformed data is combined with PI_IQ_CMD and PI_ID_CMD, then sent to the PI controller for computation. Afterwards, the hardware executes Inverse PARK and Inverse CLARKE transformations before outputting the result to SVPWM (Space Vector PWM). Finally, the PWM Engine generates six PWM signals to control the upper and lower MOSFET switches, enabling precise three-phase motor driving. This process allows rapid motor startup, acceleration and deceleration control, thereby supporting drone movements such as pitch, roll, yaw, and vertical ascent/descent.

Advantages of the CGF062A Architecture

Traditional BLDC control architectures are generally divided into two categories:
High-performance 32-bit MCU solutions
ASIC solutions with stronger computational capability but limited flexibility
The CGF062A combines the advantages of both approaches.
On one hand, it accelerates critical computations through hardware, significantly reducing CPU loading and enabling the system to handle more tasks simultaneously. On the other hand, it maintains a high degree of parameter flexibility, such as allowing fine adjustment of PWM frequency rather than restricting users to only a few fixed settings.
In addition, the CGF062A integrates a built-in 200V Gate Driver (G/D), supporting drone power systems ranging from 12V to 60V. The chip also adopts a compact QFN40 (5×5 mm) package, greatly reducing PCB space requirements.
Overall, the CGF062A achieves an excellent balance among performance, resource utilization, and design flexibility, providing an efficient and highly configurable BLDC motor control solution.
